Medical Tattoo Monitoring by Smart Tattoos

Medical Tattoo Hello I am Greg Nichols, Science and Technology Advisor for the Homeland Defense and Security Information Analysis Center and today we're going to be talking about smart tattoos. So smart tattoos are basically sensors that can either sit on top of the surface or can be injected into the surface like a traditionally bred type of tattoo. So for those working that is on top of the surface are sometimes known as a "second skin" that's basically microelectronics or nanoelectronics the hell is incorporated within some sort of stretchable substance that can sit on top of the skin that can check systems of a form. It can also be used to monitor environmental conditions like toxins or something like that.

If you use something that's more of a traditional type of tattoo we often something which would be like an ink made of nanoparticles that are able introduced merely underneath the top mantle on the surface. Some of these tattoos have actually been used to monitor glucose in diabetic cases. There have been some more developments in tattoos that are more permanent use carbon nanotubes that can go deeper into the surface and can act as little sensors, little needles if you are able to, that can pick up glucose levels and other sorts of electrolytes like sodium and the body. These the different types of tattoos and the second surface can not only be used to check form roles but they can also be used to identify individuals. So the data could theoretically be stored under some of the smart surface engineerings that sit on top and it can be used to trail people or to identify people. Clearly, some of these technologies can post on ethical challenges and security defies as well.

So some of the things that we would be concerned about are privacy problems; as these devices, these tattoos collect data, how do we know that it's being assured? How we know that these people aren't, you are familiar with, basically trying to be somebody else or trying to steal their identity. Also, the amount of data that's being transmitted from these types of sensors could be perhaps overwhelming. So there would have to be changed in the way that medical knowledge is actually stored and compiled. And ultimately since these would be medical designs they would also require FDA approval( Food and Drug Administration ). So that poses some objections too to its implementation of getting the right clinical tribulations in place and the right data and the right studies to make sure that they safe and that they are effective. Ways that this Medical Tattoo can be used among military units would be to monitor form roles and circumstances as troops are in duel to make sure fewer stress levels aren't too high; also to make sure that they're not experiencing any medical conditions, such as heat strokes, or even if their glucose levels are too high or too low.

So thank you for having tuned into Medical Tattoo today. As always you are able to throw detailed information about smart sensors and tattoos from our website HDIAC.org and don't forgotten to follow us on Twitter.
